DENISE (McGRATH) ARDIS and JAMES ARDIS
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, October 25, 2019, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
EXHIBIT DATES: October 25 – November 20, 2019
meet the artists
Clare’s 515 Gallery is excited to present a husband, wife artist duo October 25 through November 20, 2019. This exhibit will feature the artwork of Denise Ardis and Jim Ardis from Midland, Michigan. The free public opening reception of “Ardis & Ardis” will be Friday evening, October 25th from 6-8 pm.
JAMES ARDIS
James Ardis has been a working artist for more than 45 years. He started his career as a functional potter while attending CMU working on a degree in art education. This was at the beginning of the “sidewalk art shows” and the road and culture was more appealing to Jim than the classroom. Jim has often said “A man is only good for just so many coffee mugs!” and so it was only a matter of time before he had branched out into garden art, metal work, and bronze sculpting. His work has grown in size, scope, and complexity of mediums. He has numerous bronze and copper sculptures in churches in Midland, a permanent copper repousse installation at the Chippewa Nature Center, the large copper medallions on the Eastman/US 10 overpass in Midland and the bronze dancers featured in the Frankenmuth Plaza rain curtain/sculpture, not to mention the numerous works in private collections.
DENISE (McGRATH) ARDIS
Denise (McGrath) Ardis has always loved to “make” things but has in no way considered herself an artist…until very recently. She practiced nursing in the acute care setting for 25 years. After hanging up her stethoscope she worked with Jim on the road doing art shows, and painted, sculpted, assembled, sewed & knitted all the while looking for the next “WhoooHooo!”. That next thing would be meeting a local painter who was willing to share all her knowledge (vast!) of oil painting in exchange for Denise acting as a studio assistant. That painter was Kathy Jones & the next 4 years would be an absolute whirlwind! Two studios, gallery shows, competitions, openings, travel, friendship, laughter & more laughter, and painting, painting, painting.
Denise lost her mentor & friend last year, but the studio is still up and running. The rich smell of oil & mineral spirits is still inspiring & there is still painting, painting, painting! The subject of her work in abstract oil is most often a reflection on current events & her response to these.

Dietmar Krumrey is an interdisciplinary artist, writer, and curator, with degrees in literature and visual art. Krumrey’s performances have been screened across the US and Europe, and his sculptures and prints are exhibited both regionally and nationally. He is the recipient of several grants for arts education in the public schools, and his collaborative curatorial projects have shared the work of over 120 artists and artist collectives. Krumrey’s work is concerned with paradox, absurdity, communication, and transcendence, and is focused on the mortal stakes of ethics, aesthetics, ideology, and action. He currently teaches writing and literature at Central Michigan University.

SYLVIA METHNER COON – Artist Statement
Artists daydream and see the world in colors and patterns all around them. I love to doodle, scribble, and sketch wherever my imagination takes me. I draw at home, traveling, wherever and whenever I happen to have a moment to disappear into my dreams. I have been compiling and translating images from my sketchbooks into coloring books in a series that I call Artdreams. Themes from these books include animals, angels, teapots, random designs and more. This show was inspired by my coloring book drawings from which I have selected some of my favorites to interpret with paint and canvas. I have also included images from future books that will be coming soon.
My goal is to share fun images to provide escape from the everyday and reach into the imagination. Coloring is a great way to find relief from stress and this show is meant for enjoyment, devoid of any deep meanings, just pleasure. I hope this show will provide viewers with a moment of childlike wonder and delight..

Meet the Artists
Anything that is strange, accidental, individual can become our portal to the universe. A face, a star, a stretch of countryside, an old tree, etc., may make an epoch in our inner lives. – This is the great reality of fetish worship. Novalis, Neue Fragmente, No. 259
In response to questions concerning my training and schooling etc., I am, for lack of a better term, self-taught. It is my hope that the
work in question speaks for itself, in its own voice, without being burdened with autobiographical and or didactic references. If the work in question has any meaning in the accepted sense it is in its ability to combine found objects and images – the discarded debris of the once-functional and the most humble of materials – in such a manner as to demonstrate their capacity for transformation into objects that by the response they generate engage the viewer in a creative dialogue of association, allusion, and reverie beyond the limitations of the utilitarian and preconceived notions of what is worthy of “notice” and what constitutes “value”.
These works represent an encapsulation of my idealized view of Chicago, long on longing, short on patience. The street scenes and structures are all based on real locations though many have been inaccurately remembered, demolished or altered, and I take the liberty to exclude anything I don’t much like. If my view of the past is idealized, it is mostly because the city around me holds so much less that fascinates me than it used to. I began drawing and painting about ten years ago after decades of making more mechanical art. In addition to collaborative publishing projects, this my third two man show with Wayne.
Kevin Riordan is a life-long Chicagoan, graphic artist and arts enthusiast. He published Stare magazine for 15 years beginning in 1976 and has created over a dozen other artists books..My work is my gift. I give it freely.

Meet the Artists
LINDA ALLEN – Artist Statement & Bio
Linda is an eclectic artist who paints, draws, takes photographs, assembles and likes to mix it up with collage and combined mediums. Painting in acrylic, oil or watercolor is a celebration of color and motion. Linda develops textures and dimension by varying the brush stokes and combine mixed mediums and collage to enrich the tactile surfaces by applying papers or cloth to the surface. She wants you to feel and touch it. Linda is an artist who appreciates movement and action in her life and it is reflected in her drawings, painting and assemblages. Emotions are significant to her and she strives to find happiness in her life and art. Sharing that joy gives her the greatest satisfaction when people connect with her art.
Linda Allen earned her BS degree from WSU and worked in the Interior Design field for 15 years. Afterwards she went back to her first love…ART. Linda creates mixed media art using drawing, paint: watercolor, acrylic or enamel and collage. Her art is in collections in Michigan, California, Florida, New Mexico and New Jersey. Linda maintains a studio at the Pioneer Building in Detroit.
PATRICIA IZZO – Artist Statement & Bio
My creative force finds its power in fine art photography and painting. My images speak to the viewer, opening an intimate door that offers glimpses into our shared human condition. They honor both the darkness and the light in our collective lives. I am not afraid to go deep into the creative process.
Each image begins as something longing to escape that enables the viewer to feel an emotional or intellectual response.
My work is my gift. I give it freely.
It is what I am meant to do. It is this artists hope that my work brings what is needed most and that they honor your journey.
Patricia Izzo received her Masters Degree from Northern Michigan University with a concentration in painting and photography. Shown both nationally and internationally, her work is part of the permanent collections of The Detroit Institute of Arts, Kinsey Institute, Indiana, Mira Goddard Center for Photography, Reyerson University, Toronto, Canada and the Bibliothèque du Paris, France. Izzo is an artist in residence at River’s Edge Gallery in Wyandotte, Michigan.
MARTINE MACDONALD – Artist Statement & Bio
I explore notions of place and time by interpreting and distilling the natural and spiritual world into oil paintings. Complementing the paintings are intimate mixed media sculptural pieces constructed with metal, bones, wood, found and crafted objects. Their themes of home and identity have a foundation in literature and poetry, Classical and Roman Catholic mythology and traditions, and the natural world. The paintings are prose; the sculptures are poetry.
Using reoccurring images of skies, clouds and birds, and repeated motifs of nests, saints and significant women from history and literature, my work reflects intuitive decisions more often than deliberate ones. As I refine my life experiences, dreams, and memories into a visual essence, I strive to move my work towards a sense of spirituality, the very human need to know home and belonging.
Martine MacDonald is an award winning multi-media artist producing works in a variety of subject content, ranging from oil paintings to colored pencil drawings to the construction of mixed media pieces.
Martine also has considerable experience as a teacher, lecturer, exhibition curator and former arts columnist for a community newspaper. In addition, Martine spent close to a decade working in arts administration for a regional non-profit arts organization before retiring in 2009 to pursue her own artistic development. Currently she serves as adjunct faculty in arts and humanities at Wayne County Community College District, a position she as held since 2010.
A graduate of Wayne State University, with a BS in Education and a MA in Studio Art, Martine’s drawings and paintings can be found in local galleries, exhibitions, and in private and corporate collections. Martine maintains a studio practice in Wyandotte, Michigan.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Patricia Opel and Timothy Norris are long-time Michigan artists who have been exhibiting in the Midwest and nationally for the past 30 years. In addition to their own individual work in painting, drawing, and sculpture, they have also produced a series of large-scale collaborative paintings organized as the traveling show Through a Crack in the Lake, of which Sunken Cathedral was the first.
Patti has taught at the college level as an adjunct instructor at Western Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, and Muskegon Community College. She has also held positions in Academic Advising and Counseling at these institutions. Currently, she is the owner and operator of Kook’s Eye Art Gallery in Pentwater.
Tim has been an instructor of art at Muskegon Community College since 1996. Prior to MCC, he was an Adjunct Art Professor at Western Michigan University, the Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at the Art Center of Battle Creek, and an Assistant Professor of Art at Pikeville College, located in the Appalachian mountains of southeastern Kentucky. Researching Appalachian culture led Tim into his life-long interest in all things Celtic. Recently, he has developed a special course The Art and History of the Celts offered in conjunction with the Michigan Irish Music Festival held each September in Muskegon.
Chip Vander Wier creates curious sculptural objects that incorporate ceramics, welded steel and carved wood. His sculptures and bas-relief wall pieces are inspired by non-linear ideas of spirituality, time and place. Combining traditional construction methods with 19th century Eastern European firing techniques, he produces intriguing visual components combined with forms that incorporate modern chemical plating processes and finishes. Much of Vander Wier’s work utilizes and repurposes discarded objects and materials in accordance with his environmental philosophies. Vander Wier received his BFA with emphases in Sculpture and Ceramics from Grand Valley State University and earned his M.Ed. at Aquinas College. He currently teaches Visual Art at Muskegon Catholic Central. He lives and works as an artist in Muskegon, Michigan, finding much inspiration from the surrounding natural environment. Vander Wier’s work is also on display and can be seen on the third Friday of each month at the Zhou B Art Center in Chicago, IL.
